Dollar Tree Fined for Selling Toys with High Levels of Heavy Metals

Company Agrees to Pay $190,000 and Increase Testing of Children's Products

Washington State Attorney General Announces Settlement with Dollar Tree

Greenbrier International Inc., the importer and purchaser for sister company Dollar Tree Stores, has agreed to pay $190,000 and will more thoroughly test children's products as part of a nationwide legally binding settlement with the Washington State Attorney General's Office. The settlement resolves allegations that Dollar Tree sold children's products with high levels of lead and cadmium.

The investigation by the Washington State Attorney General's Office found that Dollar Tree kept recalled items in stock and failed to adequately test children's products for heavy metals. Lead and cadmium are both toxic substances that can cause a range of health problems, including developmental delays, learning disabilities, and kidney damage.

As part of the settlement, Dollar Tree has agreed to:

  • Pay $190,000 in civil penalties and costs
  • Increase testing of children's products for heavy metals
  • Develop a compliance plan to ensure that recalled items are not sold in its stores
  • Provide training to employees on the importance of product safety

The settlement is a victory for consumers and sends a message to retailers that they must take product safety seriously. The Attorney General's Office will continue to work to protect consumers from dangerous products.
