Hillbilly Elegy: A Story of Family and Culture in Crisis

By J.D. Vance

Sub-headline: A memoir that details the struggles faced by Appalachian families in the Rust Belt.

WEB Vance's grandparents, aunt, uncle, sister and most of all his mother struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life. Vance's new memoir _Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis_ details the social isolation and economic hardships faced by his family and other Appalachian families in the Rust Belt town of Middletown, Ohio.

Vance was raised in Middletown by his grandparents, who had moved from eastern Kentucky in search of a better life. However, the Rust Belt economy declined in the 1970s and 1980s, and the family struggled financially. Vance's mother and sister both became addicted to drugs, and his father was often absent.

Despite these challenges, Vance was able to escape poverty and attend Yale Law School. However, he never forgot the struggles of his family and other Appalachian families. _Hillbilly Elegy_ is a powerful and personal account of the challenges faced by these families.
