Bird Flu Spreads Across US, First Human Case Detected
Outbreak Linked to Dairy Cows, Wastewater Sampling
CDC Releases Dashboard to Track Virus
A highly contagious strain of avian flu has spread across more than two dozen states in the US, and has now been detected in a human for the first time.
The case in Texas was the first human case of AH5N1 bird flu in the United States linked to an outbreak in dairy cows and was also the first likely case of human infection with AH5N1.
The CDC has released a new dashboard to track the spread of bird flu. The dashboard includes data on wastewater sampling sites that have tested positive for influenza A.
In the United States since January 2022, detections of HPAI A H5N1 virus among wild birds have been reported in 50 states or territories.
Although health officials say the risk to the public remains low, there is rising concern emerging in part from news that the largest producer of fresh eggs in the US, Cal-Maine Foods, has reported flocks across multiple states.
